  • Book Nomad is, as its name indicates, an ever-growing travel exhibition of art books initiated by abC Art Book Fair in China and curated collectively in a nomadic and global manner. It started in Beijing during the pandemic when international travel became nearly impossible and made its way through Southeast Asia into Europe. At each stop, five more books were selected and added to the tribe by the venue hosting the show. In Europe, it has been hosted by COMMERCE in Milan, JBE Books in Paris, einBuch.haus in Berlin, and Vienna Art Book Fair. Now, it has reached its final destination, Bergen, with a collection of 56 art books focusing on “Asianness”. The exhibition will open at Northing Space on the 12th of April as a satellite event of the Bergen Art Book Fair. Northing has invited Danish artist Mette Sandfaer to craft the sculptural display system for the books. Seizing the opportunity, Northing will also open the concept bookshop within the exhibition room developed from the very first event at Northing Space, the pop-up bookshop titled 'Elephant in the Store'.

  • Ready to bring home some new handmade goodies from our Asian food workshop? Don’t miss the Ciba chilli paste-making session on April 20th at Bergen Assembly. Our Chinese food recipe creator, Michelle Zhao, will show you how to make this delicacy from her hometown, Kunming. No pre-qualification is required, but you should preferably be able to enjoy spicy food.

Ciba chilli, a condiment originated in northern Yunnan, Guizhou, and Zigong, features the distinctive Zunyi chilli known for its moderate spiciness and robust aroma. Ciba chilli is prepared by soaking dried chillies in water. Then, add ginger and garlic cloves with the chilli into a pounding bowl and grind them together until they dissolve into a flavorful paste.

  • Traditionally, books have been a medium for disseminating information and knowledge. However, the media revolution and digitalization have freed the book from its responsibility as a disseminator, much like photography freed painting from its responsibility as a documentarian. Now, more and more artists are creating books as a pure form of artistic expression. The Chinese illustrator and animator, Yifeng Zheng, will be leading a workshop where we'll learn how to make a flip book.

  • Saturday 17 February, Japanese artist Yohei Hamada will host two miso making workshops at Bergen Assembly.

Wikipedia: Miso (みそ or 味噌) is a traditional Japanese seasoning. It is a thick paste produced by fermenting soybeans with salt and kōji (the fungus Aspergillus oryzae) and sometimes rice, barley, seaweed, or other ingredients. It is used for sauces and spreads, pickling vegetables, fish, or meats, and mixing with dashi soup stock to serve as miso soup, a Japanese culinary staple. Miso is high in protein and rich in vitamins and minerals, and it played an important nutritional role in feudal Japan. Miso is still widely used in both traditional and modern cooking in Japan and has been gaining worldwide interest.

  • Inspired by old fiction and folklore from the cultural background that his name indicated, Kiyoshi Yamamoto, the Japanese-Brazilian artist, has gathered a team of talented artists and designers who occasionally draw inspiration from the same sources. They have collaborated to put up a special exhibition, which will open on the very first day of the lunar new year of the dragon. The title of the exhibition, "The Tale of Genji (源氏物語) Part II," comes from the world’s first novel, written in the 11th century in Japan, by a woman. The media deployed in the exhibition range from accessory design, costume design, and ancient poetry to edible textiles and live performances. Together, they remind us of how intimate the relationship we used to have with nature is.

Collaborators: Kyuja Bae, Shitika Agrawal, Siv Støldal, Ben Wenhou Yu.

  • Have you noticed that even though American-style 3D animations dominate our children's television, Japanese anime and manga still retain the 2-dimensional expression? It actually has something to do with the traditional Japanese aesthetic. There are many theories about it. One of them says that Japanese realism is always based on disregarding the distance between the viewer and the object, e.g. to observe birds and insects, or facial expressions as if they are right in front of you.

As the first step towards initiating a transnational exchange programme supported by Nordisk kulturfond, Regen Li and Martin Wendelbo from Tofu Collective will do a talk about the importance of strengthening the artistic ties between East and West, introduce the association's former and upcoming projects, and start a dialogue about the potential of establishing a collaborative network in the Nordic Countries to give voice to more artists affiliated to the Sinophone Regions.

  • Critically acclaimed Chinese artist Li Binyuan is on a New Year’s trip in Bergen. He paid a visit to the studio of Kurt Johannessen, whom he admired since reading the book that presented all of Kurt’s performances from 2007 to 2017. The cultural and language barriers were easily crossed after sharing some hearty moments where two artists took action to improvise with playful postures and exchange ideas through physical interaction.

Northing found this short but sweet encounter extremely valuable and would love to help extend it into a public event. Bergen Kunsthall kindly accepted our proposal and decided to host this artist talk despite the short notice.

At the event, the two artists will present some of their most important works through video screening and book launching, followed with a conversation on performance art in the context of the natural environment.
